This old-fashioned, fresh-squeezed limeade recipe will transport you to a bygone era when chatting and sipping in the old porch rocker was summertime itself. Fresh-squeezed lime juice combines with pure sugar in this simple recipe for a refreshingly sweet-tart summer sipper for everyone to enjoy!
Let’s Do It the Old-Fashioned Way
This is the ultimate refreshing summer drink that’s ready in just 5 minutes! You’ll need only four everyday ingredients to make this easy homemade limeade recipe. Plus, it’s perfect to make ahead of time and enjoy it through the day in the hot summer months.
I’ve learned through much trial and error that when it comes to super simple recipes like homemade lemonade or limeade, it’s better to make it from scratch. (And honestly just as easy as buying the powdered stuff from the store!)
Simply squeeze fresh limes (or use store-bought lime juice in a pinch), and combine in a pitcher with water and sugar. Serve with ice cubes, and garnish with fresh mint and lime slices , if desired. Then all that’s left to do it sit back, relax, and and enjoy!
Key Ingredients
You only need four ingredients to make this quick and easy homemade limeade recipe!
- Freshly squeezed lime juice (or store-bought, if you’re in a rush)
- Granulated white sugar (or your preferred sweetener)
- Water (filtered, if desired)
- Fresh lime slices and mint (for garnish)
How To Make It
This recipe could not be more simple to make! Start by squeezing your limes to yield 1 cup of lime juice. Place that in a 2-quart pitcher. Add 1 cup of granulated sugar, and stir to combine until the sugar is dissolved. (This is essentially the simple syrup for the limeade.)
Then, add enough water to fill the pitcher. Stir again to combine the water with the lime juice-sugar simple syrup mixture.
Now, all that’s left to do is serve! Pour the limeade into individual glasses with ice, thinly sliced limes, and fresh mint leaves. Refrigerate the leftovers, or freeze them to use for up to 3 months later.
Storage and Freezing Tips
- Store this prepared homemade limeade recipe in the pitcher it’s prepared in for up to 1 week.
- If making a large batch, you can freeze any extra limeade mixture in an airtight, freezer-safe plastic bag, container, or even ice cube tray for up to 3 months. To thaw, simply allow it to come to room temperature.
Tips and Variations
- Make this a cocktail by mixing in your favorite light liquor like gin, vodka, or tequila!
- Add some bubbles by serving this homemade limeade with some carbonated water (plain or citrus-flavored).
- Take it up a notch by serving this limeade with a sugared rim. Dip your limeade glasses in some water (or some limeade), then dip them into a light layer of granulated sugar mixed with lime zest.
- Add more mix-ins like thinly sliced jalapeños, sliced cucumber, or even fresh berries!
- Not a fan of lime? Use any citrus you like! Lemons, oranges, and grapefruit work beautifully with this blueprint recipe.

Oh my gosh, I really hope this sale goes through for you! Moving is a pain even without buyers pulling out and things falling through. But good things are around the corner, I’m sure of it! And this limeade sounds delicious :). I’d love a tall glass and a porch rocker–and a porch to put the rocker on, haha! Have a great long weekend, Allie!

Oh gosh, Allie! Sounds like the house situation really has been a roller coaster! Not a fun process, but I hope you get the closing this time and find a great place for your family. I love this limeade post, not only because the recipe looks delicious, but limeade always reminds me of a funny childhood memory. My bother and I woke early one Saturday morning when were were young and fixed breakfast in bed for our mom. We had pancakes, coffee, and a cup of limeade (made from a frozen can), that we just poured our hearts into for our mom. She took one bite of the pancake, a sip of coffee, then sipped down the small glass of limeade and asked for another glass because it was just “so good”. We were gone long enough for her to dump the coffee out of her window above the bed and she pushed through some of the pancakes until she was “full”. We had cooked the pancakes so fast, they were tough on the outside, and gooey on the inside…and the coffee? Well, I hadn’t yet learned the purpose of coffee filters then because I made our Mom’s coffee without one. Poor Mom. The only delicious thing on her tray was the limeade. I’m just going to have to try this recipe and invite my Mom over so we can enjoy a glass together and have a good laugh over our memory. 🙂

Oh Karla – what a hoot. You always make me laugh and I needed a good laugh today more than you know!!! On harder days I think about your Aqua net story, and that pesky buzzing fly at church. Maybe I’ll meet you and your mom someday and we’ll share an ice cold, refreshing glass of limeade. OR A GOOD CUP OF JOE!! Either works for me. XOXO

So agree with you that the beauty, joy, and lessons that are in the present. Lime and mint are the match made in heaven. Thank you so much for this wonderfully refreshing limeade. I wish I could grab that chilled glass of limeade. We missed you here. 🙂

You are right Allie. Time is flying it seems. I really wish if I could stop it. But then that is the only thing which is not in our hand. 🙁
Guess what Allie. Yesterday I was on Fast and I drank this old fashioned limeade a lot. It just that the mint was not added to it. I love Limeade. Lovely sharing… 🙂

Oh, what a stressful time! Fingers crossed the sale goes through without any more hiccups! Your limeade looks fantastic—I like limeade even more than lemonade 🙂
Michelle says
I hope this sale goes through! I’m crossing my fingers for you! Trying to sell is so stressful right now. We went through it with my mother-in-law’s house and ended up renting it instead, which actually worked out nicely.
On another note, your limeade looks delicious…there really is nothing better than homemade!
Balvinder says
Perfect! I love a nice tart lemonade and I bet the limes do the trick here.
Allie, I know what you are talking about. We were in same situation two years ago. Selling a house is especially hard on one’s piece of mind but patience is a must for the right deal.

My dear friend, am so rooting for y’all that this sale goes through! And when y’all are moved into your new home – or if y’all need to come bunk with me for a bit till y’all find your new home… I so wish we could sit around on my porch – sipping TALL, TALL glasses filled with this limeade!
Btw, I so LOVED reading “we could slow time a bit by not wishing away precious minutes we have today in anticipation of the next stage we’re headed to” and I need to practice that more – with G heading to college this Fall – I need to be more in the moment and enjoy every one of them instead of dreading the day she flies the nest! Love this post and you, my friend!! xoxo

So easy I don’t know why people make a simple syrup I just squeeze a lime stir in teaspoon raw sugar add ice then mineral water or water and the lime dissolved the sugar! Crazy good and no time wasting cooking!
